bareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lip Gloss in Hypnotist (AKA Unicorn snot)

What up homies! I’m sorry, I think I’ve actually lost the plot.

So today, we’re going to talk about a rather unique lip gloss. Hypnotist is a multi-chrome lip gloss! Now, I don’t know if multi-chrome is a thing or if I just made it up but that’s what I’m going with as a descriptor here.

Because I’m feeling loopy today, I’m going to keep the words short and inundate you with pictures instead. I may have gone slightly overboard with the swatches AND I’M NOT SORRY.

Possibly my favorite thing about this gloss is how awesome it looks in the tube. It just makes me happy to pull this out of my bag!

Look at this picture and tell me unicorn snot wouldn’t look exactly like this.

So it should be freaking AMAZING on the lips right?

….what just happened?! I will say that there is slightly more of a color change in real life as opposed to photographs but it’s still a very subtle lip gloss. I don’t actually hate how it looks though. The texture makes my lips look good and every so often there’s a subtle flash of a weird color and it’s like having a secret odd lip color. There’s something appealing about that right? Just me?

So I decided to swatch this over various lipstick shades FOR SCIENCE!

Over a nude it doesn’t look much different than it does on bare lips really. I’m not sure why I thought it would?

Over red was surprisingly the best color shift pay off. It is slightly more visible in that crappy blurry photo.

It didn’t really play very well with this lipstick formula at all. It immediately caused some weird gathering and patchiness and any color shift got swallowed up by the lipstick. I blame Obama.

In general, this gloss is too slick to apply over a pigmented lipstick without causing the lipstick to migrate to parts unknown.

From the bare escentuals website:

Color: Hypnotist Description: Holographic violet peach Coverage: Brilliant sheer-to-medium color Texture: Glides on satiny-smooth Finish: Glistening shine

Embark on a total thrill glide with Marvelous MoxieTM Lipgloss. Luscious, vibrant color loaded into a refreshing formula that slips on satiny-smooth for sheer-to-medium coverage with glistening shine. Wear this iridescent topcoat alone or layered over lipstick for color-shifting effects and knock-out shine. When applied, color shifts from pale purple to coral-peach with gold pearl.

Wear Time: Between 30 minutes to an hour.

Comfort: Hypnotist is slick rather than sticky so it’s comfortable on the lips. I do find it a tad irritating so my lips will be slightly dry the next day. It isn’t anything alarming or unmanageable but definitely worth noting for those of you who are also delicate little flowers like me.

Scent: Like Thin Mint Girlscout Cookies!! It’s delightful.

Pricing and Availability: $18.00 for 4.5ml/.15 fl oz I purchased mine at Sephora but you can also purchase directly from the bare escentuals website or from stand alone stores or counters.

Packaging: I’m only talking about packaging because this baby recently started leaking. I mean, if I’m going to have lip gloss leak in my bag, at least it’s iridescent purple and green lip gloss? But the packaging is kind of crappy.

Other claims: “luscious vibrant color”? Um. No. Sorry, but no.

Overall I actually really like this lip gloss but I’m big enough to admit that it’s likely a fascination with the novelty. It IS a pretty gloss, it makes my lips look good. It doesn’t perform particularly well over lipstick though so it’s a bit limited to just wearing it on its own.

Do you have this lip gloss? Do you love it or hate it? This has had some pretty bad reviews which I understand, it doesn’t look anything like the tube when it’s applied, but would you really want that?

Tidbits:

  • Did I already tell you about the coyote? Probably. But there was a coyote just chilling in my yard last week.
  • I’m ready for lunch and it’s only 9Am. It’s going to be a long day.
  • My Shiro samples order came in yesterday! Woo hoo!
  • My Haus of Gloi order came in yesterday! Woo hoo!
  • My pumpkin butter leaked. Womp womp.
  • I’m craving a re-read of Harry Potter. It happens every year around this time. Do you get book cravings? Do you re-read books at all?

    1. Ha! Thanks!

I’m actually amazed I got my order so quickly because they’re having that crazy fall scents rush at the moment. I got a pumpkin butter in Satyr (blood orange and vanilla) and a hair oil in Olde Cider Haus and they threw in a sample of Pumpkin Queen perfume oil.

What do you normally get from Haus? This was my first order from them. I hear a lot about their fall stuff but I’ve been stalking their site for a while just to catch PB in stock in any appealing scent, not just fall scents.

      1. I’m in love with the pumpkin butters and the bubbling scrubs. But I’ve also tried the emulsifying scrub, butter bombs, whipped soaps, bar soap and the hair oil – I love the hair oil in the winter time when my hair gets a little dry.

  1. No such thing as too many swatches, son. *life advice*

Unicorn snot is hella accurate. I kept seeing this guy at ULTA and wanting to pick it up, along with the other two duochrome fancy pants glosses… my wallet’s glad to know that they’re really nothing special, now!

A coyote in the yard? Eesh. We have coyotes in the area, never seen one, though! Scary!

Ach! I always wanna reread Harry Potter this time of year, too! Especially 2 and 3. =( Harry Potter and Hara-Kiri are basically the only books I reread, lol.

    1. Best. Advice. Ever.
Olivia just commented and recommended a Sigma gloss that DOES actually look like something special. I may have to check that out. I don’t know why but I’ve developed a longing for iridescent multi-hued lipgloss.
We used to hear coyotes out west all the time but I never saw one until I moved down south which just seems kind of backwards really. I will say that it was beautiful. And hella huge dude! For some reason I was expecting a more fox sized creature but it was much bigger. It’s totally freaky! I mostly just worry about my cats.
Books 2 & 3 were the best ones! I don’t know what it is about fall that makes me crave Harry Potter books but I’m pretty much ok with it.
So tell me about this Hara-Kiri book. Is it actually about HaraKiri?

      1. Oooh, fancy! Good luck finding one =) I think Impulse Cosmetics might have one? They have some pretty wild glosses.
Ah yeah, coyotes do eat cats, we’ve lost some to them. =(
2 and 3 were the best! They just seem like great Fall books, even though they cover the whole year, haha.
Absopositivalutely. I really love learning about seppuku and have a few books on it. This book in particular is a handy little guide on the culture, methods, alternatives, and reasonings for harakiri. =)

      2. Holy cow, they do have some wild glosses. Did you ever make an order with them?
I’ll have to check that book out, I actually know very little about the culture surrounding HaraKiri

      3. Yeah, I did a review of them ages ago actually, lol.
Seppuku is incredibly interesting. =) The book is by Jack Seward, it’s pretty short.

  2. Man this looks so beautiful in the tube, too bad it doesn’t play well with others. Hey if you’re looking for actual color changing gloss, check out Sigma Lip Switch. I have Otherworldly and it’s AMAZING.

  3. You had me at thin mint Girlscout cookies!
This is one of those glosses that I’d buy simply because it’s so pretty in the tube (hypnotizing, as it were) but all the magic disappears upon application (same with nail polishes and eye shadows that I’ve purchased before!) I do find they’re better suited as toppers, especially against a dark base – so I’m not too surprised that this gloss looked good over red lipstick. I bet it’d look stunning over BLACK lipstick… if you got any around. πŸ˜›
    I never re-read books, it’s a struggle to read them the first time round, I don’t need a repeat… πŸ˜€

    1. Right!? I would be OK with all lip products being reminiscent of thin mints! I missed girl scout cookies season this last year which is really sad for me.
I see what you did there πŸ˜‰ I don’t actually have a black lipstick but some of the fall Wet n Wild lipstick shades were nearly black. I’ll try that, I think you’re right, it will be a good combo!
      That makes complete sense!
