January Empties

I’ve amassed a bit of empty skin care product containers recently and rather than throwing it all in the recycling bin like a normal person, I decided to photograph it and talk about it on the internet! Yay empties posts!

gud Body Butter in the scent Orange Petalooza – The gud brand is an offshoot of Burt’s Bees and it consists of body lotion, body butter, shampoo and facial cleansing wipes. There are a handful of different fragrances and out of the two that I’ve tried, the orange scent is my favorite (although the grapefruit scent was pretty good as well). This is pretty easily accessible, it can be found at Target, Walgreens and I believe it’s at CVS as well.

Number of times I’ve purchased: Around five

Would I repurchase: Yes

Ole Henriksen Truth Creme Advanced Hydration – I purchased this in a kit and this was a nice face cream. It was relatively light but still moisturizing and it didn’t have any adverse affects. Generally, my skin felt and looked good while I was using this. The full size is 1.7oz and retails for $45.00.  This was heavily scented (orange and slight pine fragrance) and while I enjoyed the scent, I’m not crazy about fragrance in my face products. This does have some nice ingredients but it’s packaged in a jar so I’m not sure how many of those ingredients actually stay active for the entire time that you use this product.

Number of times I’ve purchased: 1

Would I repurchase: No

Estee Lauder Advanced Time Zone Face Cream – This came in a deluxe sample pack along with a few other products from this line. I can honestly say that I have no idea if this is a good face cream or not because I only used this once and then realized that it contains a chemical sunscreen. So that was fun!

Number of times I’ve purchased: Gift with purchase x 1

Would I purchase: Nope!

Coconut Oil – I sang the praises of coconut oil as a hair treatment in my 2014 Skin and Hair Favorites post so I’m going to do the clicky thing and not repeat myself again so soon. Coconut oil is becoming easier to find in the grocery store which is nice.  This particular tub was around $7-$15, I can’t quite remember.

Number of times I’ve purchased: Multiple

Would I repurchase: Done and done!

Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil – This is a blend of seabuckthorn oil, cranberry seed oil, camellia seed oil, grapeseed oil and sweet almond oil. My skin responded very well to this oil for the short time that I used it, and I was a little sad when I finished up this little sample bottle. On the down side of the product, this smelled strongly of lavender and rosemary and it does contain additional fragrances (including citrus fragrance which isn’t awesome for your skin DESPITE my glowing review of a citrus scented body lotion in this post. STOP JUDGING ME OK?!). The full size of this product (1.7oz) retails for $50.00.

Number of times I’ve purchased: Gift with purchase x 1

Would I purchase: No

Monoi Tiki Tahiti in Vanilla – I also mentioned this in my Skin Care Favorites post and it’s still awesome.

Number of times I’ve purchased: More than 10

Would I repurchase: Yes but I absolutely must use up some of my other body oils first. My bathroom is starting to look like the skin care aisle of a drugstore.

Tarte Pure Maracuja Oil – This smelled, felt and performed exactly like argan oil. I enjoyed using this, it was a nice face oil. I HATE the dropper. Rather than a traditional rubber topped dropper, you press the gold button on the top of the dropper and that’s supposed to pull enough product up into the dropper (that word is starting to sound strange now) but it doesn’t. Maybe this isn’t an issue on the full sized bottles but it drove me bonkers. The full size bottle (1.7oz) retails for $46.00. Frankly, I can get argan oil for much cheaper and I couldn’t tell the difference between the two oils.

Number of times I’ve purchased: Gift with purchase x 1

Would I purchase: No

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser – This was indeed a gentle cleanser, so gentle in fact, that I’m not really sure it was cleaning my face. It definitely does not take off makeup. The consistency is an oily gel texture. This didn’t dry my face out or break me out, but I just didn’t love it. It was gentle though which is what I was looking for, it just left me underwhelmed. This retails for around $5-$10 and is widely available at most drugstores.

Number of times I’ve purchased: 1

Would I repurchase: Probably not.

Jergens BB Body Cream – I really enjoyed using this particularly in the summer. It gave a subtle bit of color to my super extra white legs and it also provides a light amount of moisturization. It’s heavily scented (Maybe a sweet amber type fragrance?) but I quite liked the scent. Jergens makes some pretty hefty claims about how this product will rock your world and I don’t think it’s a miracle lotion but I still enjoyed it.

Number of times I’ve purchased: 2

Would I repurchase: Yes.

Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster – Confession: I may have purchased this a few times just because it smells really really good. Like orange creamsicles. I’m a horrible hypocrite. This is a nice serum, it has some good antioxidants and vitamin C but it also has a lot of fragrance. Delicious orange cream summer time fragrance. My skin does feel soft and look nice when I use this. A full 1oz jar retails for $48.00

Number of times I’ve purchased: 2 plus a few deluxe samples

Would I repurchase: Sadly, no. I’m trying out some fragrance free options (that are cheaper…yay!)

So that’s it! That’s a good solid look at my garbage, exciting stuff man!

Where do you stand on the fragrance in skin care issue? I’m so torn because I love things that smell nice but I’m trying to move away from things that will potentially dry my skin out even more.

  1. I accidentally purchased the Cetaphil cleanser when I thought I was buying Cetaphil lotion, which my doctor recommended for my VERY dry skin. I keep it in the shower and use it there. While it won’t remove makeup, it’s a gentle body cleanser.

    1. That’s a really good tip, thank you! Right now I’m using aCeraVe cleanser that is really similar to the Cetaphil one in that it’s very gentle and not at all drying but i feel like it gets my face a little bit more clean. Still doesn’t really remove makeup though.
